Preparing for Acupuncture Treatments
- In the 2 to 3 hours before your treatment, try to avoid strenuous activities.
- Avoid eating a large meal before your treatment, but don't fast either -- just eat as normal.
- Do not drink alcohol within 4 to 6 hours before or after a treatment.
- Since part of the diagnostic process may involve looking at the patient's tongue coating, avoid eating/drinking things with food dyes that could color the mouth, brushing your tongue, or painting your tongue (e.g., with gentian violet).
Wear comfortable clothes. Except for certain conditions (for example, treating back pain or digestive problems, which may use points on the back or on the abdomen), most points are located at or below the knees and elbows, so wear clothes that allow access to these regions easily. Some patients bring shorts or sweatpants to change into for the treatment.
